Frequently Asked Questions about Neurofeedback


1. What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a type of brain training that uses real-time visual and other sensory feedback to help your brain learn to function more efficiently.

2. How does it work?

Sensors on your scalp measure brainwave activity and a computer gives feedback, that is represented visually on a screen, that encourages the brain to develop desired patterns.

3. What conditions can it help with?

It helps treat a wide variety of conditions from PTSD and anxiety, to learning struggles like dyslexia, to treating migraine and tension headaches, or simply help with better performance in activities like athletics. Neurofeedback treats many more things than are listed here.

4. Is it safe?

Yes, it’s non-invasive and generally considered very safe. It doesn’t involve medication or electrical stimulation. If you have concerns, please talk with your doctor before starting treatments.

5. Does it hurt?

No. It’s painless. The sensors only read brain activity; they don’t send anything into your brain.

6. How many sessions do I need?

Most people need 20–40 sessions for lasting effects, but this can vary depending on the condition. 

7. How long is each session?

Sessions typically last 50 to 55 minutes with 40 to 45 minutes dedicated to brain training.

8. When will I see results?

Some people notice changes within a few sessions, while others may take longer (10+ sessions) to begin to see improvement.

9. Is Neurofeedback backed by science?

Yes, there’s a large existing body of research supporting the efficacy of Neurofeedback as well as many new studies being worked on and published.

10. Can it be used with other treatments?

Yes, it can complement medication, therapy, or other interventions.

11. Is Neurofeedback covered by insurance?

Superbills can be provided for submission to HSA or FSA accounts. For reimbursement often a letter of necessity for Neurofeedback training is needed from a provider such as a doctor or mental health professional.

12. Can children use Neurofeedback?

Yes, it’s often used with children with strong results.

13. Are the effects permanent?

Most people experience long-term benefits, though occasional “booster” sessions may help maintain progress.

14. What’s the difference between Neurofeedback and biofeedback?

Neurofeedback targets brain activity and is a form of biofeedback. Biofeedback is a treatment used with parts of the body.

15. Who provides Neurofeedback?

Trained Neurofeedback Technicians who have been trained and certified by EEG Info.
